Title of Study

Development and Validation of a Scale on Teachers’ Perception towards School Counselling

Authors

Shanta Upreti (1st author) — School Counselor, Kathmandu University School of Education

Durga Prasad Dhakal (2nd author) — Assistant Professor of QT, DoMIC, Kathmandu University

Sanskar Dhakal (3rd author) — Leipzig University

Yash Raj Lamsal (4th author) — DoMIC, Kathmandu University

Objective

With roughly 300 theories used across counseling and mental health services (Neukrug, 2015), identifying the “right” approach is difficult. In practice, individual theories are often grouped into six main theoretical categories, offering a systematic way to understand counseling across diverse perspectives.

Method

Boateng’s nine-step scale development and validation process was followed: a qualitative phase built the domain and item pool through literature review, interviews (5 participants), and an FGD (11 experts); a quantitative phase then used 221 participants for exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and 438 for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). All analyses were run in R.

Result

The TPTSCP scale proved theoretically sound, psychometrically valid, and well structured. EFA and CFA supported a factor structure consistent with McAdams’ six-domain framework, with reliability and construct validity at acceptable levels.

Conclusion

The TPTSCP scale offers a valid framework for evaluating and aligning teachers’ perceptions, supporting the accessible implementation of school counseling programs.

R Analysis TPTSCP Scale School Counseling Framework

Significance Statement

Determining which counseling theory to use, and understanding how teachers perceive school counseling, is a complex and challenging issue. McAdams’ six-domain framework helps address this theoretical diversity. Building on it, the TPTSCP Likert-based scale measures teachers’ perceptions of a school counseling program ahead of its implementation.

Node clusters correspond to the six domains of the TPTSCP scale; edge thickness reflects the strength of association between items.

Table 1

TPTSCP Scale Development Overview

Phases Study Methods Description Sample Size Items at End
Item Development Domain identification and item generation Literature review and FGD Identified appropriate items 11 6 domains & 48 items
Content validity Expert judges Assessed whether the items accurately measured the TPTSC 5 40 items
Pre-testing FGD with end users Tested degree of correlation, adequacy of sample size for EFA 5 35 items
Scale Development Test run of items and scale administration Cross-sectional survey Assessed measurement validity, examined item loading, and determined variance explained by each factor 221 23 items
Scale Evaluation Test of dimensionality, reliability, & validity Four months later in a longitudinal study Conducted confirmatory factor analysis 438 23 items

Note. This table covers the methodology of the study. The three phases of scale development and validation shown are adapted from Boateng et al. (2018). FGD = Focus Group Discussion; EFA = Exploratory Factor Analysis; TPTSC = Teachers' Perception towards School Counselling.
